With over 600 documented ghost stories, Montreal is easily the most haunted city in Canada, if not all of North America. Haunted Montreal dedicates itself to researching these paranormal tales, and the Haunted Montreal Blog unveils a newly researched Montreal ghost story on the 13th of every month!

With Montreal Summer in full swing, so is our full slate of outdoor ghost walking tours and paranormal investigations! Our Haunted Pub Crawl also continues to run our Haunted Pub Crawl as well as our newest daytime walking tour, the Indigenous-Led Colonial Secrets of Old Montreal.

This month, we revisit one of the oldest and most haunted buildings in the city which is currently being repurposed as a museum. We try to find out if the ghosts will still be there.

Haunted Research

In July 2017, Haunted Montreal reported on Maison Pierre du Calvet, a well-known haunted house in Old Montreal. Constructed in 1725, the ancient home most recently served as a spooky and intimate 9-room boutique.

Maison Pierre du Calvet hosted receptions, business meetings, weddings, and romantic getaways. The hotel was also frequented by celebrities like Brad Pitt, Sophia Lauren and Richard Gere.

It also featured a Victorian greenhouse where three bilingual parrots lived in large cages. The birds, Pedro, Chico and Coquette, were known to speak with ghosts when the greenhouse was unoccupied.

The two ghosts most often spotted in the hotel were a card-shuffling man dressed in 19th century clothing and Marie-Louise Jusseaume, the wife of Pierre du Calvet. Sadly, she died only three years after their marriage and apparently returned to haunt the building.

Today, the building is being transformed into the latest pavilion of the PHI Centre, an organization and museum that promotes contemporary artists. With a postmodern design that combines historic structures with glassy walls, many are wondering how the ghosts of the original home will react to the new museum.

Indeed, The PHI Centre wrote: “Long before the current buildings existed, this site already played an important role in the territory, underpinning the city’s positioning, evolution, and collective life. Over time, houses, courtyards, gardens, businesses, and public spaces have come and gone, continuously transforming the site, while carrying the traces of its past lives.”

Haunted Montreal went to check out the construction site containing Maison du Calvet on August 4^th to try and get more information.

We asked a security guard about the ghosts in the building, and he assured us they were all gone. When asked if anyone had done an exorcism, he said no. In fact, the guard was adamant that Maison Pierre du Calvet was no longer haunted. He seemed annoyed at our line of questioning, so we departed.

The following day another guard was present who seemed more accommodating. When asked about the ghosts, this guard claimed not to be aware of any of the hauntings associated with the site. When asked if they had encountered anything strange or unusual, the guard confessed that the many security cameras on site often picked up unexplained shadows moving around and even birds flapping before the lenses.

While it is unknown what happened to the paranormal parrots, the bizarre images captured suggest that the ghosts are still present as workers refurbish the site into an art gallery.

The only question that remains is how the spirits that haunt the ancient Maison Pierre du Calvet will react once their creepy home is transformed into a glossy new museum.

Coming Up on September 13: Montreal’s Haunted Steamship

In 1870, Montreal-based steamship Relief sank in the St. Lawrence River downstream of Montreal. While the crew was saved, the captain went down with the ship. Engineers managed to refloat and repair the ship, which was used to tow lumber barges from Ottawa to Burlington, Vermont. A 1926 Ottawa Citizen article claimed that the boat was haunted. The crew heard strange noises from rapping on the outside hull and the boiler to footsteps on the deck when nobody was stationed there. They asked a priest in St. Anne de Bellevue to exorcize the ship and bless it, which is when the noises finally stopped.
